Jun 01, 2014 · I looked down below where the steering shaft connects to the gear - and it appears that it connects in a slot - and as you steer, that slot moves - so you have to steer alot to get a little movement - the nut is very tight, so it's not a "being loose" thing on the gears - but I don't understand why the huge slot is there - and why it is slipping.

I went and bought an intermediate shaft after reading all the horror stories. Went to replace it to find my i-shaft is fine but my steering gearbox had a blown bearing. On the steering wheel column after it comes out of the fire wall there is a cup underneath the steering gear jacket, I think it has u-joint assembly. From the cup to the steering wheel its loose but from the cup down its solid, it doesnt move. Its the piece right above the intermediate shaft assembly.

this condition has the potential to cause the steering gear to stall and restrict the steering turning angle of the vehicle which could result in a vehicle crash. corrective summary: freightliner is working with trw to replace the defective steering gear (please see 07e101). the recall began on april 18, 2008.
